6. Bergen Airport, Norway – Fjords & Colourful Harbours

Bergen Airport is just 20 minutes by light rail from a city surrounded by fjords, mountains, and colourful wooden houses. Spring and summer bring long daylight hours and lush green landscapes which are perfect for scenic walks and boat trips.

Bergen is a good city to use as a base: small enough to cover on foot in a day, but with fjord cruises and mountain hikes launching directly  from the centre. The Fløyen funicular is a 10-minute ride to a viewpoint with walking trails through birch forest. This airport is ideal for travellers who want a unique city break with dramatic natural scenery.

The reason to use it as a short-break base is the range: Chamonix and Mont Blanc are 90 minutes away by bus, the Lavaux Vineyards (UNESCO-listed terraced vines above Lake Geneva) are 30 minutes by train, and the cable car to Mont Salève for panoramic views is 15 minutes from the city.

Spring and summer are perfect for swimming, cycling, paddle boarding, and lakeside walks.

Spring and early summer are ideal, the lake warms to swimming temperature by late May, wildflowers appear on the surrounding hills, and the crowds are lighter than July and August.
