Peru offers an array of stunning locations for both day hikes and extended treks, catering to adventurers of all levels.

Many people often overlook Peru as a hiking destination, or only associate it with the Inca Trail. However, Peru has varied radions of breathtaking landscapes and historical sites making it a great country for trekkers. Peru offers many opportunities, from brief day hikes to demanding multi-day treks – just be prepared for altitude.

The top hiking regions in Peru include the Huaraz and the Huascarán National Park, Cusco & Sacred Valley.

Laguna Paron is situated near Huaraz in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range within the Huascaran National Park. It it renowned as one of Peru’s most beautiful glacial lakes and makes for an ideal day hike. Its turquoise waters framed by snow-capped peaks of Cordellera Blanca provide not only stunning views but also kayaking opportunities for those wanting to see and experience the lake from a different angle.

The lake is easily accessible as a day trip from Huaraz and makes for a more difficult  acclimatisation hike. Alternatively, visitors can reach Laguna Paron by car or tour bus. Remember to bring some cash for entrance fees.

Huayhuash Circuit

The Huayhuash Circuit is considered one of Peru’s most challenging multi-day hikes, as it requires trekkers to spend most of their time at high altitudes (over 4,000 meters above sea level). This multi-day trek begins near Huaraz and often takes around 10 days.

The Huayhuash Circuit is one of a kind. What sets it apart is its breathtaking views of turquoise glacial lakes, snow capped mountain, but most importantly its isolated Peruvian communities that offer a glimps into traditional mountain culture. This multi-day trek is one of the least crowded hikes in the area due to its difficulty and remoteness in comparison to other long distance hiking trails like the Santa Cruz trek or those near Cusco.

Laguna 69 is a popular day hike for tour groups and independent trekkers alike as it can be easily visited from Huaraz. Laguna 69 is another beautiful turquoise lake in the Huaraz region surrounded by snow-capped mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, lush meadows, livestock and rivers. Hikers often appreciate this trail for its diverse scenery. Often viewed as a more difficult trail than some of the other day hikes mentioned in this post. We’d recommend you only attempt this once you’re fully acclimatised.

Santa Cruz Trek

In comparison to the Huayhuash circuit, the Santa Cruz trek is significantly more popular because it requires less time to complete, so you’re likely to see more tourists along this route. This long distance trail can be done independently and as part of a tour. Santa Cruz Trek showcases spectacular views and a variety of landscapes ranging from the turquoise glacier lakes to the Andean wildlife. The Santa Cruz Trek can often be combined with Laguna 69. Another long trail to consider in this area is the Alpamayo Circuit.

Salkantay

The Salkantay Trek serves as an excellent alternative to the Inca Trail. It offers stunning views that are comparable to those on the Inca Trail but at a fraction of the cost. This multi-day hiking trail near Cusco explore areas near the  Humantay Lake and goes to Salkantay Pass. It explores many lush forests and glacier features. Salkantay trek is a lot less crowded than the Inca Trail and feels more authentic and peaceful.

Unlike the Inca Trail, hikers can explore the Salkantay trek independently without a guide. For those who prefer a flexible pace, this trek is ideal. However, a major drawback includes not descending from the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu on the final day; instead hikers ascend from the near town of Aguas Calientes. If you’re after a short hike, you can consider hiking the Humantay lake & Salktatay Pass on a two day hike.

Humantay Lake is a stunning glacier lake located 120km from Cusco and is a popular day hiking route.  Its vibrant blue waters create a stark contrast to the snow-capped mountains and highlight the natural beauty of the Peruvian Andes. The Humantay Lake is surrounded by Andean peaks including the Salkantay Mountain.
