About the Artwork
A Desert Tree Against Banded Red Hills
A thin, twisted tree leans out of a crumbling bank of orange earth, its roots exposed where the soil has washed away. Behind it, a cone-shaped hill rises in bands of rust and cream, scored top to bottom by rain gullies.
This was taken in Altyn-Emel National Park, a large stretch of desert and mountains in the Ili River valley in Kazakhstan’s Almaty Region. The park is known for hills like these, most famously the Aktau, or ‘White Mountains’.
